Western Cape Police have confiscated close to R15 million worth of abalone and arrested two suspects during two busts over the weekend.

In the first seizure officers arrested a 20-year-old Chinese National and 30-year-old Zimbabwean man in Parow at an abalone drying plant.

The R5.4 million worth of the delicacy was confiscated.

Police spokesperson, Andrè Traut, says following the men’s arrest, officers were led to another drying plant in Tygerdal, Goodwood.

Police seized abalone and equipment worth an estimated R9.5 million. No arrests were made.

Traut says they consider the operation a step closer in breaking the back of the lucrative abalone trade in the Western Cape.
