Police call on community to help with Soweto drug bust saga

Reading Time: 2 minutes

National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole says the discovery of a drugs manufacturing lab in Orlando West in Soweto is the result of improved crime intelligence gathering.

Police raided the property just after midnight on Wednesday following a tip-off from the community. Residents say no one lives in the house but they have seen one person going in and out of the property.

Commissioner Sithole has praised police for the breakthrough in the fight against drugs. “This breakthrough means we have been able to chop the supply of drugs,” said Sithole.

Sitole said the evidence found was sufficient to warrant a criminal case being opened and that the police will be able to give the estimated value of the recovered drugs at a later stage.
He appealed to the neighbouring community or anyone who has information to come forward and report to the police on any further detail that could assist in concluding this case.
“The truth is, the house had been abandoned on our arrival, but that’s a discussion for another day. So we are on the lookout for suspects and we therefore need the public to assist us with apprehending the suspect or suspects,” Sithole said. Additional reporting by ANA
