The Electoral Commission (IEC) has pleaded with the public to refrain from torching and vandalising properties that are hosting polling stations. The plea comes after a school in Kraaipan, in the North West, was torched by residents last week over what they say is poor service delivery by government.

IEC chief electoral officer, Sy Mamabolo, has called on communities to allow for people to vote peacefully.

“We want to take the opportunity as the IEC to say the opportunity for civil protest is gone. We now need to create an environment where voters can vote in peaceful circumstances and we want to urge community leaders to come to the party with respect to that. We  also call upon law enforcement agencies to take action when laws are being transgressed.”
