Reading Time: < 1 minute

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega testified about the role of the police during an illegal strike at Lonmin platinum mine which claimed 44 lives.

She was heavily criticized after commending the men in blue for a job well done, after they had shot and killed 34 of the 44 people on the 16th of August last year.

Phiyega told the Marikana Commission of Inquiry that she stood by her stance that police acted in self-defence when they shot Lonmin miners.
