University of Cape Town (UCT) Council Chairperson Sipho Pityana says the appointment of Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng as the university’s new vice chancellor will bring positive change to the institution.

Phakeng replaces outgoing vice-chancellor Dr Max Price, who served at the institution for ten years, and leaves at the end of June.

Pityana says Phakeng, a leading maths educator, will provide academic, strategic, transformational and ethical leadership for the institution.

Pityana says, “After an extensive and inclusive process, pleasantly the university has decided – overwhelmingly to appoint professor Mamogkethi Phakeng as the new vice chancellor of the university effective first of July 2018.”
