Business people from the rural town of Peddie in the Eastern Cape are counting their losses after their businesses were gutted by a fire. It’s unclear how it started, but firefighters worked through the night to extinguish it.

The fire has affected nine businesses, most of them owned by foreigners. The fire has inconvenienced local residents in doing their daily shopping.

Some of the business people have described the incident as a huge loss.

“Damages! Everything is gone. It looks like the roof has collapsed. We don’t know. It is just a shock for us,” says one business person.

“It affects me a lot because I lost everything. It’s my life. It’s my business and now I don’t have anything. I have got a wife and a family here,” says another.

Ngqushwa mayor, Mnikelo Siwisa says they have a plan to assist these businesses.

“We will see, as government, what kind of intervention we can do in order to assist the process in terms of planning turnaround time, being more hasty and faster and ensuring that the business goes back into operation,” says Siwisa.
