Party politics aside as Madikizela-Mandela escorted home

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Political affiliations were put aside as African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Winnie Madikizela- Mandela arrived for the last time at her Orlando West residence in Soweto.

The body of Mama Winnie arrived at the house just after 5pm on Friday.

The crowd that gathered in their thousands cut across party politics as members of the ANC as well as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) sang and danced together.

As the cortege made its way to the house, the streets of Soweto were filled with thousands forming a guard of honour for the late struggle stalwart.

As a final farewell to mama Winnie a night vigil will be held at Orlando Community Hall.

Hosted by ANC leadership, the vigil is expected to be another festival of song and dance in celebration of the life and times of Madikizela-Mandela.

It will include various ANC organs as well as members of the public, and is scheduled to start at 8pm on Friday until early Saturday morning.

The funeral service will begin at 9am before a private burial that will take place at the Fourways Memorial Park.
