Parly to question Mokonyane about SABC retrenchments

Communications Minister Nomvula Mokonyane is on Wednesday expected to answer various questions about the SABC. It includes a question on the retrenchments. On Monday, the public broadcaster notified its staff about its intention to embark on the retrenchment of 981 permanent staff and not to renew the contracts of 1200 freelancers. Mokonyane and Finance Minister Tito Mboweni are among the various Ministers in the Economic Cluster who are expected to face pressing questions on various issues in the House.

Minister Nomvula Mokonyane is expected to answer a range of questions which also include why the Parliamentary Channel on DSTV is still not aired on an SABC Channel. A question on whether the Public Investment Corporation is in the process of releasing millions of rands to an oil refinery in Mozambique will be asked to Finance Minister Tito Mboweni.

The new Finance Minister will also answer a question on what relief affected VBS depositors, especially the rural poor will be given by National Treasury. Other ministers, who are expected to face questions relating to the portfolios are the Ministers of Energy, Public Enterprises, Mineral Resources, Labour, Economic Development and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
