Parliament has confirmed that it has received a serious complaint against one of its members and that it has asked the ethics committee to probe the matter.

Sunday newspapers report that State Security Minister, Bongani Bongo allegedly tried to bribe Parliament’s Eskom Inquiry evidence leader, Advocate Ntuthuzelo Vanara.

The Democratic Alliance says it will lay a criminal complaint about the matter and ask the Public Protector to investigate Bongo. Parliament has refused to divulge further details of the complaint.

“Unfortunately we can’t say what are the allegations but the allegations are so serious that they warrant the presiding officers give this matter to the ethics committee of Parliament so that they can look at them and given the processes that will be naturally followed, they should be able to tell us the basis to those allegations or not. If there are basis for those allegations then they will then begin a fully-fledged process of investigating them,” says Parliament Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo.
