Parliament expresses concern over Vaal Dam pollution

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation has expressed shock at the state in which it found the Vaal Dam.

This comes after reports that fish were dying in the dam because of a change in the temperature and not raw sewage that was being pumped into it.

The committee’s chairperson Mlungisi Johnson says municipalities should seek urgent ways of ensuring that the contaminated water is cleaned.

“Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni municipalities equally have to come and play a role. They are equally pumping waste water in the dam. It’s a whole range of complex and complicated issues that need to be nipped in the bud.”
