Six Gauteng schools have been implicated in fraud amounting to over R5-million. 12 others have been found to be involved in financial mismanagement. That’s according to Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi in a written reply to a Democratic Alliance (DA) question in the Gauteng Legislature.

In some of the schools the principal, administration clerks, finance officials and teachers are allegedly involved in the fraudulent use of public money meant for learners.

In some cases criminal charges have been laid against those implicated.

Gauteng Shadow Education MEC Khume Ramulifho says, “This is a huge concern as this is the money which was supposed to be used to benefit learners by making sure that the learning and teaching environment is conducive. So when the money gets stolen or mismanaged it means that learners and teachers are the ones who get deprived in such an environment.”
