The Palestinian embassy has joined world leaders in sending messages of condolences to the family of African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela following her passing.

The 81-year-old struggle icon died in Milpark Hospital Johannesburg Monday.

Palestinian ambassador Hashem Dajani says Mama Winnie’s passing is not only a loss to South Africa and the ANC, but for the people of Palestine.

“Palestine and the Palestinian leadership join fellow South African people and our comrades in the ANC in grieving the loss of Comrade Mama Winnie Mandela, the mother of South Africa. She was a symbol of struggle against apartheid regime and an inspiration to all the people who are still fighting for their freedom, particularly the Palestinian people. We will always remember Mama Winnie as a great fighter for the freedom and the woman who dedicated her life to helping the oppressed people of South Africa and those around the world.”

Dajani says Palestinians are blessed to have had a good relationship with the struggle icon.

“We recall her support for our Palestinian struggle. She remains one of the strongest defenders of our just cause to achieve freedom and independence until her last moment on earth. We will continue to carry her international spirit in our struggle and solidarity with the oppressed people in the world. We will always remember and learn from her patriotism and resilience. Our sincere condolences go to her family and the entire nation of South Africa.”
