Paarl East residents rebuild after shack fires

Authorities in the Drakenstein Municipality in the Western Cape say they are doing all they can to help rebuild the lives of people affected by a fire on Sunday.

A 31-year-old woman has died following the fire which left more than 270 people homeless in Paarl East in the Boland.

Her partner is believed to be in a critical condition in hospital.

Emergency personnel say the biggest challenge is accessing the damaged area.

Residents build structures so close to each other that fire trucks struggle to get in.

Acting Mayor Rean Smuts says they want to improve this.

He says, “We need to construct the accommodation in a more formal way so that fire trucks and ambulances can access the area. We need a plan for this. It will take some time, but I’m sure once we are done residents will be happy.”
