At least 81 people are feared dead after an overcrowded boat sank in the Kasai River in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Police say 27 bodies have been found so far.

Most of the victims were students on holiday.

Government official Jacques Mbila says the pilots on the boat were drunk.

The boat had left Dibaya in the central Kasai province on Friday, heading northwest for its final destination of Ilebo more than 500 kilometres away.
