The African National Congress (ANC) caucus in the City of Johannesburg says 57 officials at the Johannesburg Metro Police Department have been suspended on full pay despite investigations into their alleged misconduct having been concluded.

The ANC believes this is costing the City over R1.2 million per month. The party says most of the suspensions are beyond three months and in contravention of the city’s Disciplinary Code.

Johannesburg Public Safety MMC Michael Sun has confirmed the suspensions.

“I will certainly communicate with our department officials to understand exactly how many JMDP officials are on suspension.  But it is also in terms of our labour laws that the suspension is with full pay. So there’s no doubt that the as the city we need to comply with the national legislation when suspending an employee.”
