Outcry over NGO’s HIV testing at PE school

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Parents of children at a primary school in Port Elizabeth are fuming after a non-governmental organisation tested their children for HIV without their consent.

The non-governmental organization erected a tent in front of the school where it conducted the testing.

Some parents allege that some of the children tested positive and their results were announced in front of other learners.

Angry parents say the children were not provided with counselling.

“My child came home and he gave me his status and then I said no man how can these nurses do such a thing. They are under age these children, so they must tell the children go and call your parents. They are not supposed to do those things without the parent’s consent. The parents can also keep away that from children. Because at the end of the day, the children are gonna be scared to come to school, because the children are going to tease them.”
