One miner dead and three trapped after seismic event

One mine worker has died and three others remain trapped underground at the Anglogold Ashanti’s Mponeng mine near Carletonville – west of Johannesburg.

Eight miners were initially trapped after a seismic event the caused a fall of ground. Four miners have already been rescued alive.

“Search at rescue teams are hard at work through challenging ground conditions to remove the fallen rocks in order to locate three employees who remain trapped underground. Their condition remains unknown at this stage. And we would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased employee” said mine spokesperson Chris Nthite.

The National Union of Mineworkers says it’s saddened and disturbed by this. The NUM’s Livhuwani Mammburu….

“This fall of the ground was triggered by seismic event. The search team is able to communicate with one worker. So the rescue operation started after the incident happened. As the NUM we’re wishing all the workers to be rescued alive.”
