Officials urge motorist to cooperate in Beitbridge border post

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Home Affairs authorities at the Beitbridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe are attributing the traffic mayhem on the congestion on the Zimbabwean side of the border.

The department’s Stephen van Neels says that the Zimbabwean authorities were overwhelmed by travellers. He says that they were unable to clear  travellers as there is no space inside the port of entry – thus causing congestion on the N1 outside Musina.

Limpopo traffic authorities are also appealing for cooperation from motorists caught in the traffic mayhem on the N1 at the Beitbridge border post.

Some motorists are ignoring the traffic officials and directing traffic.

Limpopo traffic spokesperson Matome Moremi says, “Our traffic officials have been there ever since with all the resources available and it will be easier if our motorists are cooperating as well. Our traffic officials are deployed there to assist to ease the weight; all the roads leading to Zimbabwe are problematic.”

Travellers, who’ve been trapped for hours in the long queue at the Beitbridge border post, are suffering from the tropical heat in northern Limpopo.

There are no mobile toilets or water tankers being provided. One group was transporting a body for burial in Zimbabwe.
