Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga has been appointed as the High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa. Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat says the appointment is in line with the continental’s body drive to expedite the integration of the continent through infrastructure in order to promote economic growth and sustainable development.

In his statement, Mahamat said Odinga as the High representative on Infrastructure development, will work to support and strengthen the efforts of the Commission’s Program for Infrastructure Development. His mandate will include mobilizing political support from Member States and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and facilitating greater ownership by all concerned stakeholders on the continent.

He will also support the Commission and NEPAD initiatives to encourage increased commitment from development partners.

Odinga has previously served as a minister for Energy, Roads, Public Works, and Housing.
