Nzimande oversees official launch of railway enforcement unit

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Transport Minister, Blade Nzimande has overseen the official launch of the railway enforcement unit at the Cape Town Station.

The unit has been created to help Metrorail in its battle against ongoing vandalism, cable theft and burning of trains, resulting in extensive train delays in the Western Cape.

The unit will also assist in beefing up security on trains.

A few months ago, several train commuters came under attack, were stabbed and thrown off trains while travelling to Stellenbosch.

Nzimande says while the unit is much needed – communities making use of the train service – also need to help by informing police officials of the operations of what he termed “vandals”.
