The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) is concerned about employment requirements that make it difficult for young people to join the workforce.

The agency’s chairperson, Sifiso Mtsweni was speaking ahead of Youth Month launch at the Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum in Soweto on Tuesday.

Mtsweni says experience must be removed as a requirement to accommodate the youth.

“A lot of companies in our country advertise jobs that are not meant for young people. They tell you that you need five years’ experience you need ten years’ experience. How are you supposed to have such experience when you are 21 years? You should have started working at the age of 11 – so one thing we are calling for is that remove experience as an entry level requirement so that those people are able to get access.”

This year, Youth Month 2019 will be commemorated under the theme 25 Years of Democracy.

Youth Day 2019 marks 43-years since the June 16th, 1976 Soweto uprising, when the apartheid government killed students who were protesting against the imposition of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in their schools.

National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Chief Executive Officer Waseem Carrim also outlined some of the programmes they will be having for the Youth month.
