NUMSA determined to settle wage increase negotiations

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) says they are optimistic that fresh wage talks with Eskom will yield positive results.

NUMSA along with other unions is set to meet with executives of the power utility on Tuesday with workers demanding a 15% salary increase.

This after Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan’s intervention. The zero-percent salary increase was put off the table.

NUMSA General-Secretary Irvin Jim says Eskom has a bloated executive that grant themselves bonuses at the expense of the workers.

“We are going to engage with an intention to find a settlement that could settle this round of negotiations. Eskom executives and management have been paying themselves bonuses and workers were not necessarily getting huge bonuses or fair increases. It’s unfair to want to punish poor workers to not get increases,” says Jim.
