The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says they are concerned about the health of hundreds of miners who remain trapped below the surface at Sibanye-Stillwater Beatrix mine near Theunissen in the Free State.

Reports indicate over 60 miners have been rescued and more than 900 remain trapped.

The incident happened after a severe storm affected power lines at the mine on Wednesday night.

“From the information that we got from our members, they are worried because some of the members who are being rescued after suffering from heat cramps and dehydration and shock. Remember some others have got chronic illnesses like high blood pressure and they don’t have their medication underground right now. I just spoke to one of our members and they say Eskom said it will take ten hours from now to bring it to power. So that is the latest that we’ve got,” said NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu.

Meanwhile, Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson James Welsted says efforts to rescue the trapped miners are continuing.
