NPA revisits decision not to prosecute Duduzane

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Duduzane Zuma must submit reasons to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) as to why he should not be prosecuted for culpable homicide.

This relates to a crash that claimed the life of Mekilina Dube on Johannesburg’s M1 highway in 2014. The NPA decided not to prosecute the son of former President Jacob Zuma at the time.

AfriForum’s private prosecuting unit, led by Advocate Gerrie Nel, cannot take up the case until the NPA issues a certificate stating that it declines to prosecute.

AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel says the prosecuting authority has now informed them that it’s taking its earlier decision under review.

“We have now received information that Advocate Shaun Abrahams is reviewing his decision of his office not to prosecute Zuma for culpable homicide. This of course is after Advocate Nel asked for a nolle prosequi certificate to prosecute Duduzane privately so this pressure has worked. From AfriForum’s side we believe it’s a victory, not only for AfriForum but for the Dube family, and in the interest of justice,” says Kriel.
