The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) KwaZulu-Natal Premier candidate, Velenkosini Hlabisa, has accused the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of being biased in the way it is dealing with murder charges against an African National Congress (ANC) mayor.
The charges against Harry Gwala Mayor Mluleki Ndobe were provisionally withdrawn after his arrest. He was charged with the murder of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.
Hlabisa was speaking at an election rally in Ndwedwe north of Durban.
NPA head advocate Shamila Batohi requested a report on the handling of the case from the provincial director of prosecutions.
Meanwhile, Hlabisa has called on people to voice their grievances without resorting to violence and the destruction of property. He was referring to the violent protests that brought Mandeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast to a standstill for about a week.
Protesters looted a number of shops and set at least three factories alight. People from the area have been demanding the immediate resignation of the Mayor Sphesihle Zulu.
They accuse him of corruption and failing to ensure that basic services are delivered to communities.
