The health woes plaguing the North West seem to be far from over. This as health practitioners at Christiana Hospital in the Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality spoke out about the deteriorating health services and infrastructure at the ailing hospital.

During an explosive expose, hospital staff told SABC news that overcrowding and shortages of staff, linen, equipment and medication pose a great danger to patients and staff, leaving them vulnerable to cross-infection.

Patients are complaining.

“I have been here since yesterday and I haven’t bathed because there is no hot water. Look now I had to get my own blanket at home,” says a patient.

“This hospital does not help people. Many people have died,” adds another patient.

However, provincial health authorities say plans are underway to upgrade the hospital which is at least 58-years-old.

MEC for Health, Magome Masike, has threatened harsh action if hospital management is found to have been negligent.

“It’s basic health care, that you don’t mix TB patients with the rest. So, we’ve got four isolation wards in the hospital. We’ll have to come down strong on management. And I need evidence as to which patients were mixed with which patients, which day. Every health care worker should know… It’s very basic. So its important that I know, I get all the details so that I may be able to attend to it.”
