No discussion yet on fewer provinces: Mfeketo

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Chairperson of the ANC sub-committee on Legislature and Governance, Nomaindia Mfeketo, says the ANC hasn’t made a discussion on fewer provinces yet.

She says a decision taken before on the nine provinces, which was intended to create a unitary state that will serve the needs of all South Africans, was not by choice.

According to Mfeketo, their resolution was that in an effort to continue improving effectiveness of the State, they always needed to look at how the pre-spheres are working, whether they are fulfilling the goal envisaged when they spoke of the nine provinces.
Mfeketo’s interview with SAFm’s AM Livecurrent affairs show comes on the back of reports that the ANC is calling for a review of the number of provinces, as a result, this would see fewer but larger provinces being formed.

She has been quoted as saying the re-configuration of provinces has nothing to do with reclaiming the Western Cape, but to make sure that the country’s resources are shared equally across the provinces.
