The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the Eastern Cape says it is pleased with the overall summer season festivities it hosted in the city.

Strict security measures such as banning alcohol on beaches were put in place across the metro.

Thousands of people packed the beaches on Wednesday and evidently not everybody has gone back to work.

Missing children was one of the biggest problems encountered on New Year’s Day and 15 of the 25 children that have gone missing have been reunited with their families.

Municipal spokesperson, Mnthubanzi Mniki, says the public also played their part.

“We are still going to monitor the situation for now because we are still expecting large numbers in our beaches up until this coming weekend. People are still going to flock and we have deployed enough lifeguards to monitor the situation.

Our waste management will continue to work, our metro police will continue to work around the areas that people flock. The message remains that there will be no drinking and driving, no alcohol in our beaches and we expect people to respect the rule of the law,” Mniki explained.

Large numbers of holidaymakers and locals headed out to the beaches of Nelson Mandela Bay again on Thursday, taking stock of the new year’s day beach pilgrimage.
