Mabasa goal sees Pirates secure all three points

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Orlando Pirates returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership, securing a 1-0 victory over Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers got their only goal through an 80th-minute strike by Tshegofatso Mabasa from an assist from man of the match Linda Mntambo. Highlands Park coach Owen Da Gama had this to say about the goal conceded.

The game had a number of touchy incidents as in the first half Da Gama felt Pirates midfielder Abel Mabaso should have received his marching orders for a two-footed tackle on veteran midfielder Lindokuhle Mbatha.

On the other hand, The Buccaneers were under pressure to end their three-match winless run in the league having succumbed to a surprise 1-0 defeat to Stellenbosch FC in their previous game. The Soweto Giants coach, Rhulani Mokwena, feels everything is beginning to fall in place for his side with the return of key players from injury.

Mokwena feels consistency will be key for his team to kick on from this much-needed victory.

Mokwena refused to comment about the contentious Pirates goal but expressed satisfaction at being on the fortunate end of it all.

Da Gama took time to give credit to his opponents and in particular Mokwena and added that the young gaffer needs time to implement his ideas. – Report by Jefferson Lupuwana
