Nine people have been killed in a head-on collision between a taxi and a bakkie in Ladysmith in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

Provincial Department of Transport spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane says the driver of one of the vehicles lost control and collided with an oncoming vehicle on Helpmekaar Road.

Several people were also injured and transported to nearby hospitals.

Ncalane says Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda will be sending a team to investigate the cause of the crash.

“One of the vehicles lost control and collided with an oncoming vehicle. This is happening at a time when as provinces we are working very hard to continue to sustain the good position that we achieved during the festive season. We note this accident as a major setback. But we are calling on all road users in the province to drive cautiously and use the road extra carefully.”
