Acting Cape Town Mayor, Ian Nielson, says he cannot wait any longer to appoint a mayoral committee to assist in governing the city.

Nielson, who is the deputy mayor of the city, is acting as mayor after the Democratic Alliance‘s (DA) federal executive terminated Patricia de Lille’s party membership earlier this week.

De Lille approached the High Court in Cape Town for an urgent interdict on Friday to reinstate her membership of the DA.

She also asked the court for interim relief pending the outcome of the urgent application to retain her position as Executive Mayor.

Judgment has been reserved until May 25. The court interdicted the IEC from filling her city council position.

Neilson said in a written statement he is required by statute to appoint a mayoral committee to assist in running the city.

He says however out of respect for the court he will delay making the appointment on Monday afternoon.

Nielson says budgets need to be finalised for the new financial year.

The acting mayor will convene a mayoral committee meeting for Tuesday morning.
