NIC calls on ANC to probe loss in support in Indian communities

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Natal Indian Congress (NIC) has called on the African National Congress (ANC) to look into reasons why the ruling party is losing support in Indian communities.

Speaking at the 125 years celebration of the NIC in Durban, anti-apartheid lawyer and activist Paul David blames the party of losing values that the NIC believed in. He says many South Africans of Indian origin accuse the party of deserting and betraying them.

David says many feel the ANC no longer has their best interest at heart.

“We haven’t say to the ANC to actually work out why we lost this support so quickly. The question to ask is who is responsible where do we ascribe blame? We thought we had the Indian community in solidarity with the African majority in all the campaigns. But the other accusations that we betrayed the community are far more stronger in terms that Pravin Gordhan in his fight against corruption is a lone voice, and that the ANC is not giving him enough support,” says David.

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan has called on the NIC not to lose faith in the ANC. Gordhan was speaking at the 125th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the NIC in Durban. Gordhan says the party wants to protect the country’s democracy and lead with integrity, like the leaders who fought in the liberation struggle.

“Let’s count in the wisdom of our people which says we want a safe and secure South Africa, we want a South Africa that creates jobs and opportunities for young people and women in the society. We are confident that we can overcome the obstacles that we have at the moment, whether it’s state capture even Eskom load shedding, I can assure you. We will build a truly great nation that our previous generation will be proud of.”
