The 2017/2018 tax season will be officially opened on Monday by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene when he releases the SA Revenue Service (SARS) Service Charter.

The tax filing season started at the weekend and SARS encourages taxpayers to use the online e-filing system and to only submit returns if they are eligible to do so.

The tax season is shorter this year, lasting only four months, ending in October.

SARS spokesperson, Janine Mqulwane explains that the Service Charter will enable taxpayers to hold the Revenue Service accountable by understanding their rights and obligations.

Mqulwane says, “The SARS service charter is SARS’ service promise to taxpayers. It includes the taxpayer’s rights and obligations. SARS then makes certain service commitments to the taxpayer. The taxpayer will know exactly what they can expect from SARS and what service to expect and it assists them to hold us accountable. We in turn expect the taxpayer to submit honest and accurate information and that’s being launched when we officially open tax season with the finance minister Nhlanhla Nene.”
