Non-profit organisations Media Monitoring Africa and Support Public Broadcasting Coalition (SOS) have raised concern over the delays in appointing candidates to fill eight vacancies on the SABC Board.

The organisations have written a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa, Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete and the chairperson parliament’s portfolio committee on communications Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, requesting that the process be finalised urgently before Parliament is dissolved on March 20, 2019.

National Coordinator at SOS, Duduetsang Makuse, says parliament has been dragging its feet in appointing a new board and the cause of the delay is uncertain.

She says the implications of having an incomplete Board, means the SABC cannot take major decisions such as adopting new policies.
