Could this be the next ANC top six?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

With the ANC’s 54th elective conference happening this weekend, who will lead Africa’s oldest liberation movement when the gathering ends on December 20? If the nominations from the nine Provincial General Council (PGC) meetings are anything to go by, Cyril Ramaphosa will probably be the next president of the African National Congress.

The provincial nominations are based on tallies of nominations from the branches in each of the provinces.

In a SABC News collation of the nominations, Ramaphosa seems to have a clear lead. However there is no guarantee that delegates will vote in line with these nominations.

Our calculation is based on the number of provinces that approved Ramaphosa as ANC President, Jacob Zuma’s successor. Ramaphosa was the preferred candidate of five provinces with Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma getting approval from four. Though Dlamini-Zuma received the nod from two of the biggest provinces in terms of delegates, namely KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, Ramaphosa was favoured by more provinces with more branch nominations overall.

For a detailed picture of how the PGC’s voted watch:

If the PGC’s nominated candidates are a anything to go by, this could be the ANC’s new top six:

  • President: Cyril Ramaphosa
  • Deputy president: David Mabuza
  • Chairperson: Gwede Mantashe
  • Secretary General: Senzo Mchunu
  • Deputy SG: Jessie Duarte
  •  Treasurer General: Paul Mashatile
