New Year’s Day babies welcomed in 2020 around SA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

74 New Year’s Day babies have been welcomed in Limpopo between midnight and six o’clock on Wednesday morning. These are 40 boys and 34 girls.

The Department of Health says the first babies were delivered at midnight at Siloam and Tshilidzini Hospitals in the Vhembe District.

Amongst the new mothers is a 19-year-old, who has welcomed triplets at Groblersdal Hospital in Sekhukhune. There are three other teenage mothers.

In the North West province, so far 25 New Year’s babies were successfully delivered between midnight and Wednesday morning.

The provincial health authorities say all the babies and their mothers are healthy. MEC for Health Madoda Sambatha says five of the 25 babies were born in Klerksdorp hospital.

“Before half-past eight it was around twenty, but here it is around five where we are. The reason why we have this programme is to welcome them as in the entry in the year. This one is also the beginning of a population register that is why we have home affairs office in each health facility so that they can register. When they are discharged, they’re discharged with birth certificate having ID numbers.”

SABC News speaks the new mother. “I am very happy to give birth to a baby boy and his name is Banele. He arrived at around five in the morning. I am so happy to have him because he is my last born.”
