Reading Time: < 1 minute

The ANC Caucus says a new president will be elected now that Jacob Zuma has resigned.

However, ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu says this is subject to the availability of the Chief Justice.

Zuma announced his resignation late Wednesday night.

The ANC national executive committee decided to recall him during its meeting on Monday.

Mthembu says: “It’s very likely depending on the availability of the Chief Justice that we might as well tomorrow after we have voted for the removal of the president of the republic also elect a new president. If it’s not possibe tomorrow, indeed Friday it’s still a day.”

Meanwhile the ANC says it will continue to engage Jacob Zuma on reasons why the party recalled him as the head of state.

Zuma maintained that the party did not explain reasons for his recall.

Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte says Zuma will be formally briefed in this regard.

The ANC is weary of possibilities of yet another splinter party from those aggrieved about Zuma’s recall.

The ANC NEC deployees will crisscross the country in the next coming days to explain the recall to party structures.
