Reading Time: < 1 minute

Government says the signing of the new Independent Power Producers (IPP) programme worth R56 billion will make electricity cheaper, cleaner for hard pressed consumers in the long term.

The signing of the agreement was delayed by an unsuccessful court challenge from unions who were worried about job losses in the coal sector.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of 27 IPP in Centurion, Minister Jeff Radebe says the new programme also confirms South Africa’s commitment together with 195 countries across the globe to the Paris agreement for the reduction of carbon emission worldwide.

Radebe says, “Our people deserve clean affordable electricity which will not have a negative impact on the environment as well as on their health. Our national development plan one its objectives are to ensure that we procure 20 000 MW electricity of renewable by the year 2030 and it is supported by the integrated resource plan that will be finalized very soon.  It is a very effective climate change mitigate and a water smart program. ”
