Nelson Mandela University students adamant to continue with protest

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Nelson Mandela University students in Port Elizabeth have barricaded entrances to the North and South Campuses of the institution.

The students are complaining about several issues including financial aid and shuttle services.

Despite the meeting between the student leadership and the institution management, students are adamant to continue with the protest.

The meeting resolved that emergency financial support will be supported for qualifying NSFAS students, lectures will resume and students who wish to protest are allowed to do so peacefully and not infringe on the constitutional rights of others.

University spokesperson Zandile Mbabela says the institution has opted to serve an interdict to the striking students.

“As I speak now the Sheriff of the Court is reading out the interdict to the protesting students. The interdict in the nutshell is to protect the rights of the protesting students and those not taking part in the protest to be able to carry on with the university business.”

The interdict was served after academic activities were disrupted when the strike began on Tuesday.

Sasco member, Thembalethu Nyikilana says the students have not been violent during the protests.

“As far as the interdict reads, the students remain peaceful. We are going to adjourn, to go and sit with the institution. So as far as the interdict is concerned, you will understand that there are necessary legal structures that need to entertain the matter at hand,” Nyikilana says.

“As far as we are concerned, we are here for a genuine protest. Students don’t have text books, students don’t have meal allowance, and students don’t have accommodation.”
