National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) has accused the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Hlengiwe Mkhize of undermining its members.

Mkhize failed to show up to receive the union’s memorandum of demands.

Nehawu members marched to the department’s head office in Pretoria to submit a memorandum of demands.

They lament rampant corruption in the department’s SITA’s and TVET Colleges, as well as the department’s delay in converting contract workers to permanent staff.

NEHAWU’s general-secretary Zola Saphethe says the Minister has seven working days to adhere to their concerns:

“We feel undermined and disrespected by the minister, given the nature of the issues that we bringing for her attention. We felt that those issues require her attention as opposed to sending people who are implicated and are subject matters in the memorandum. So our message is clear, if the minister is so serious about the workers who are working in her department, she must come to Nehawu house as she knows our office to come and get the memorandum, with the intention to respond to the memorandum.”
