‘Nationalisations of mines will cripple state’

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal says it agrees that the nationalisation of mines would cripple the state. The party held a weekend policy workshop in Durban to prepare for the upcoming National Policy Conference between the 24th and 29th of this month. The party’s youth wing and others have been calling for the nationalisation of mines. With regards to land restitution, Provincial Secretary Sihle Zikalala says they believe platforms should be created to debate the issue. “We agree with the ANC task team that did research on nationalisation, we agree that nationalisation of mines will cripple the state and it has no solution it does not address our challenges. We also agreed that there is a need of expediting the land reinstitution program but we don’t agree that we should go around grabbing the land with no compensation. We believe that a proper platform should be created to debate and discuss the issues of land redistribution.”

Zikalala says it also wants to see economic transformation so that the majority of previously disadvantaged people can participate fully in economic development. “There are key resolutions that we have taken already one of that is to expedite the economic transformation we are saying the focus of our country should be about embarking on a second transition. This second transition should be about changing the ownership of economy and ensure that the majority of our people participate in the economic development of our country.”
