Taxi commuters have been urged to arrange alternative transport next Wednesday.

This comes after the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) announced that its members would embark on a protest march to the Transport Department and the Union Buildings in Pretoria. They accuse the department of failure to address their long-standing concerns.

These include the controversial Taxi Recapitalisation programme, delays in issuing operating permits, and the exclusion of the taxi industry from receiving public passenger transport subsidies. More than ten-thousand taxi operators are expected to participate in the protest.

NTA general-secretary Alpheus Mlalazi says, “We will be marching to deliver memorandums of grievances to the minister of transport as well as the presidency at the union buildings. This protest march has been necessitated by the minister of transport failure to appreciate the severity of the problem in the taxi industry to the extent that the growth and development of the taxi industry, compromising road safety and customer care.”
