North West Provincial Commissioner Baile Motswenyane has called on the public to avoid drownings during the festive season while relaxing next to dams, rivers and pools.

Motswenyane says with the expectation of more rainfall causing streams and rivers to overflow, people need to be more cautious.

According to police, school holiday season is also a period in which children commonly drown.

General Motswenyane is urging parents to closely monitor children to avoid such incidents.

He says most important rule of water is that everyone should respect it and its environment and the dangers involved.

Members of the community are requested to therefore exercise caution and always be on the look-out for advisory signs. Police say it is very important to check for the presence and strength of the water current before entering into it.
