The spotlight is once again on renewable energy. This as Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown earlier this month gave Eskom the green light to sign outstanding power purchase agreements with independent producers who form part of the country’s independent power scheme.

Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape has been allocated two massive renewable energy projects. But residents there are concerned that they’re not properly benefiting from the deals.

The abundance of wind has already led to the construction of two wind farms. They were completed last year.

And now the sun has brought with it a 86MW solar plant.

Residents say the wind farms brought jobs, but very little economic development for locals.

They’ve vowed that the winds of change will come with the solar project.
