Mwasa welcomes SABC appointments

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Media workers union Mwasa says the new Group Executive appointments made at the SABC should be welcomed.

Mwasa was reacting to the appointment of Madoda Mxakwe as Group CEO and Yolande Van Biljon as Chief Financial Officer.

Van Biljon started on Monday, and Mxakwe will start in July.

Mwasa Secretary General Tuwani Gumani says: “We are however concerned that the Board itself remains with vacancies, and we are not sure how this decision is going to flow should the Board fully quorate. However, we welcome the filling of vacant positions. It has been a long battle to get this done. It is never about individuals. It is always about team work, and we are hopeful that these two individuals are going to assist in plugging the holes and building the team work which is required to get the systems of the SABC, the procedures of the SABC, the protocols of the SABC and the policies of the SABC to drive the organisation into the direction it should be going.”

Meanwhile Electronic and Broadcast workers union Bemawu says while the new executive appointments will bring stability, it has reservations about the new CEO’s ability to manage a big corporation like the public broadcaster.

Bemawu President Hannes Du Buisson says: “In respect of the CFO that has been appointed, it seems that she has quite a good track record up until now. In terms of the CEO, we are not so sure about his abilities at this point in time… It seems that he has been a spokesperson for government previously, and also for Nestle. So one would have expected the SABC to rather appoint a person who really has a solid background managing a multi-billion rand company like the SABC. But time will tell. We will wait and see.”
