Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has declared Thursday [today] as a day of mourning for Zolile Khumalo.
Khumalo was shot and killed at the MUT Lonsdale residence in the Durban city centre last week, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend.
The memorial service will also be held later on Thursday.
Murder accused Thabani Mzolo, 23, will also be appearing at the Durban Magistrate’s court today for a bail application.
MUT Senior Director Mbali Mkhize says they want to show solidarity with students and the family.
Mkhize said, “The reason the executive management felt that we should mourn today is because the accused is appearing for the second time this morning and there’s also a planned memorial service for the deceased. And secondly we want to make a statement to say gender based violence has no place in our university and we want to elevate this now to the whole nation to say there should be no place for gender based violence.”
