Muslims are celebrating Eid-ul -fitr on Wednesday following the fasting month of Ramadaan.

Groups gathered at Three Anchor Bay in Cape Town on Tuesday night for the sighting of the crescent moon despite overcast conditions.

Eid is traditionally marked by early morning prayers, visits to gravesites and family lunches.

President of the Crescent Observers Society of South Africa Hadj Umar Gabier says: “Ramadaan, the Muslim calendar consists only of two dates. It either 29 or 30. Its never 28 or never 31. Therefore, we don’t have a leap year so we are going accordingly to the rule of the Sharia of the sighting of the moon.”
