The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) says it has received messages of support from various religious communities after the desecration of 70 headstones on graves of Muslims at the Mowbray Cemetery in Cape Town earlier this week.

It has described the incident as a case of “Islamophobia”.

Headstones were placed in different formations, including the shape of a cross.

The council has roped in the University of Cape Town’s Religious Studies Department to assist.

Second Deputy President of the MJC, Shaykh Riad Fataarsays: “Muslim, Christian, Jewish…responded with condemnation of that which has happened. No one wants their loved ones disturbed. That is just downright inhumane-ness.”
