Reading Time: 2 minutes

Britain’s Andy Murray fought back from a set down to advance to the second round of the Citi Open tennis tournament in Washington.

Murray beat American, Mackenzie McDonald, in three sets in a tough mental and physical battle.

It was the former world number one’s second win in a year after undergoing hip surgery in January.

Murray has struggled with injuries for more than a year and was eager to start his quest to return to the sport’s top ten.

But his previous hard-court match was in 2017 and it was no surprise that he initially seemed a bit rusty.

After McDonald overcame a nervous start, the American bagged the first set 6-3.

But true to form, Murray fought back slowly but surely. He finally converted his seventh match point.

To record a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 wins in two and a half hours and book his place in the second round.

He will face his compatriot and 4th seed, Kyle Edmund, next. In other matches, American wildcard, Noah Rubin also advanced.

Rubin dispatched of Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-4 in 80 minutes.

And Romania’s Marius Copil beat Bosnian, Mirza Basic 7-6, 6-4.

He will meet 14th seeded Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy in the second round.
