Former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he supports the calls for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission-like process to be conducted in his country.

Mugabe made these comments in his first address after he was ousted as the head of state in November 2017.

A bill has been tabled in the Zimbabwean Parliament to fast track a formal reconciliatory mechanism for the country.

Key to the talks of rebuilding, is Gukurahundi – the state sponsored massacre of over 20 000 people believed to be dissidents in Matabeleland in the 1980’s.

Mugabe says dialogues on past injustices are necessary to heal the nation.

He said, “Only through dialogue can we get our problems peacefully solved. I can’t see how we can run away from that. There are matters that have been outstanding for a long time. You make mention of the Matabeleland issue, there is a need to have the Gukurahundi corrected.”
